Girls' House Floor Plans

Front of the House:
A dark red brick house in Victorian style with green and pale yellow trim around the doors and windows. There is a porch with a creaky wooden porch swing that causes a great annoyance during storms or times of high winds. The door is a dark wooden colour that hasn't been painted in years. There is also a decently sized front yard with various flowerbeds around the porch and large trees that is positioned in front of the house.. To the left is the boys' house that is built in a very similar fashion and to the right is Shore Blvd. and a view of the East River. The house is on Hoyt Ave. a semi-busy street, for directly across the street is Astoria Park and a small pharamacy called, "The Candy Kitchen". In the backyard is the churchyard. There are 3 entrances to the house, the front door (leads to the front room), the back door (leads to the Back Hall), and the side door (leads to the kitchen). The Front and Back doors both have porchs, but the side door only has a small stoop.

First Floor

Lobby/Front Room:
Nothing really interesting...Kitchen and main stairs ahead of you, parlor to the left of you, turretted room with the front desk in it to the right of you. Oil lamps and a few pictures are on the walls. This room in itself is very small.

Turreted Room/Front Desk:
Another very small room, surrounded on all sides by tall picture windows with fine stained glass detailing at the top. A large and extremely disorganized wooden desk is crammed into this room as far to the right as whoever brought it in could possibly get it. This is where all important papers are stored. In the top drawer on the right, which is always kept locked is the emergency cash box, which is also always kept locked. The only person who knows the location of these keys is Sister Hannah.

Kitchen/Dining Room:
Yep, it's one of those combination deals. In the middle of the kitchen is a large wooden table surrounded by simple wooden chairs that is meant for the lodgers to eat at. Along the outside wall are various cupboards that tend to stick, windows, the sink, and stove. The icebox is on the inside wall, as is the collection of dumbwaiters. One to the bunkroom, one to the attic, one to the guestroom, and one to God knows where. Usually a plate of cookies, made by Annette, can be found in the center of the table. Can be entered from the front room or the side door.

Parlor:
Is entered by the large wooden archway to the left upon entering the house. Is one of the larger rooms in the house. Has a fireplace, which is old, dusty, and made of grey marble paneling. Near this fireplace on the left is a collection of fire pokers, and other such possible weapons and on the right is a tarnished brass woodbasket that is full of logs, when someone has the mind to fill it up. Along the front outside wall there is a dull crimson coloured fainting couch directly below the windows and just a bit away from this is a very old and battered baby grand piano. There is a green velvet couch facing the fireplace (a red blanket with indigo trim is draped over the back) and a few blue and red velvet chairs. Two wooden endtables each having an oil lamp on them are at either end of the couch. A third endtable with a new phonograph (the pride of the sisters) on it is in the front of the room on the inside wall. At the back of the parlor is another archway leading to the back hall...

Back Hall:
Small hallway behind the parlor leads to the back stairs, the back door/porch, and various other room that no one uses much. Long brown and navy weaved rug that covers the wooden floor goes down the hall.

Sister Hannah's Room:
Also known as "Mother Superior's room" by the sisters, who once lived in the house. Is basically bare except for a bed, a chair, and a night stand. Is off limits to the lodgers.

The Prayer Room:
Is entered through Sister Hannah's room. Is also off limits to the lodgers as Sister Hannah keeps her personal assets and the house keys in here.

Back Stairs:
Wrought iron, spiral staircase that leads upstairs to all the floors and is the only staircase that accesses the basement. These stairs are found directly behind the kitchen.

Main Stairs:
Tall wooden staircase situated between the parlor and the kitchen. There are several religious sorts of paintings and wall mounted oil lamps on the walls. Halfway up the stairs is a landing and the stairs switch directions. On this landing is a wrought iron bench with a flower stand on either side. It is below another large picture window with stained glass detailing at the top.

Second Floor

Front Hall:
Wrought iron bars over look the staircase and there are several sparatically placed wooden chairs. From those chairs people in the front room can be seen without the knowledge of those in the front room. Upon coming up the stairs, the bunkroom is directly in front of you and then the hall branches off in two directions. The main stairs also head to the third floor from here. At the very end of the hall to the left is a stopping point of the back staircase.

The Bunkroom:
The largest room in the house, which has 20 beds with wrought iron frames. A few have brass frames, but the brass is so tarnished it's impossible to tell the difference. Each bed is pushed up against the wall and has an emerald green bedspread over it. Next to each bed is a small nightstand with an oil lamp on it. These nightstand were once white with little ivy borders, but the paint is so chipped that it's something of a memory. Each nightstand has two drawers that the lodgers can keep things in. If they need more space for their belongings, there is a large bureau. In the very left corner of the room there is a turreted room the same size and shape as the one downstairs, except instead having a desk crammed into it, there is a small blue velvet couch and a massive collection of pillows. The windows look directly out to the branches of the large oak tree. To the right of the turreted room just past a window is a small balcony that looks out over the grounds and Hoyt. Ave.

The Washroom:
To the left after coming up the stairs, and across the hall from the bunkroom is the washroom. There is a long counter on the outside wall with a row of ten sinks and a mirror above each sink, except for two that are positioned under the windows. There are 5 tubs and toliets and each has a sort of curtain that wraps around it, hanging from pipes above it.

The Guestroom:
To the right after coming up the stairs and next door to the bunkroom. Was used for travelers when the building was a convent. Has a small bureau next to the door and two beds, each with a green and white bedspread over them.

The Library:
To the right after coming up the stairs, and across the hall from the guestroom, is the library. It is a nicely sized room entirely filled with bookshelves. There's a small wooden table in the center with wooden chairs around it. And a few velvet chairs, like those downstairs are around the edges of the room

The Third Floor

Front Hall:
This floor is little more than an attic in the first place, but it has a long open hallway in the first as it was once used as more lodging for the sisters. At opposite ends of the hall are the continuation of the backstairs and a heavy door opening to the attic stairs.

Attic Stairs:
After opening a heavy wooden door at the right end of the hall, there is a small room with a rickety, old staircase that leads to the attic. and another rickety, old staircase that is roped off because no one is suppoed to use it. Not even Sister Hannah knows where it goes. It has been roped off for many years.

Fourth Floor

Attic:
It is somewhat hard to get around up there thanks to the shape of the roof, but it is full of old furniture, religious articles, and tons of unused fabric. Is just a general storage space. can be reached either by the attic stairs on the second floor or the back stairs.

The Roof

A dangerous perch, but it does have a damn good view of the area. Has dark coloured shingles. Is accessible by either the third floor windows, the attic windows or the large trees.

The Basement

A dark room that is only accessible by using the back stairs, although I don't know why you'd want to go down there. It's cold during all seasons, floods in the spring, and smells vaguely of incense and gunpowder. Some of the sisters claim that it's haunted.
