Snowdrift Skard

monday_1889@yahoo.com

* waltzes into the room and takes a seat at the desk* Good afternoon, my name's Annette *smiles at the new face seated nearby* *picks up a paper from on top of the massive mess on the desk* Now, just a few questions and you get to go on your way. Don't make this into a disagreeable experience, okay? *nods decisively* Let's start at the beginning. What's your name? I'd appreciate your full given name, *looks up expectantly* you know, first and last:

*speaks with a very hard to place accent that distorts most of the vowel sounds and either
abbreviates or separates many of the consonants* First and last? Drífa Skard. *hesitates* And this is Angel *scratches the head of a black and white husky that is curled up next to her* *peeks over at the paper as Annette is writing* *finds actually writing in English
a very hard thing to do and it fascinated* You know paper like that is a very hard thing to get where I am from, but down here it is everywhere.

*nods* Alright *scribbles the name and a few stick figures on the paper* *snatches it out of view* Do you have a name of sorts that you'd rather be called? *to herself* I prefer my real name, but hey, to each his own. *looks over with a bemused smile on her face* And, how'd you get that particular nickname?:

My nickname is my real name, well at least the meaning of my name. Snowdrift, it get’s pronounced right more than Drífa usually. I’ll tell you why my parents named me that, though. My twin sister has brown eyes and brown hair while I have pale hair and light blue eyes and have always been smaller than her so my parents thought I looked like a little snowdrift next to her. *smiles* there you go, not very hard.

*smirks* Cute, real cute *snickers a little* So, how old are ya, huh? And on what day will you be turning a another year older?:

*narrows her eyes at the snickering* My name is not funny *is very protective of her name* *glares a little more for good measure* I am 16 but I can only tell you that I was born in the summer. My parents have never been very up on the calendar so I never
knew the actual date. We do not celebrate birthing as many people we have met here do.

*raises her eyebrows* That's a decent time of year *casts a furitive glance at out the window* So, now where were we? *looks over the paper, now riddled with stick figures and curly handwriting* Oh, yes, your looks. *nods* Now, don't give me a hard time, just tell me what you look like. *puts her pen to the paper expectantly* You know, like eye and hair colour, height, and all that other stuff. Pretend I'm blind, okay?:

*follows Annette’s glance out the window and sighs wishing it was colder* My looks. *pulls at her hair then smooths out her tunic a little self consciencously* *finally rests a hand on the husky’s head sitting in her lap* Long, straight, pale blond hair, ice blue eyes. I’m about 5 feet 9 inches tall and wear a string of amber and this necklace. *hold up a necklace string with four bear claws with a carved bead between each* My father made one for each of my siblings from the first bear he killed after we moved to the district of Alaska. I wear these in the winter *stomps a foot clad in a knee high fur lined boot* and none in the summer when these are too warm. My tunic my grandmother made for me, is embroidered. *runs two fingers over the animal pattern stitched around her collar* My pants are just pants though, they got too small for my little brother so I took them. Oh and
this! *thrusts the hand that had been absently scratching Angel’s ears and pulls back her sleeve the reveal a scrap of leather tied around her wrist with flowers tooled and painted on it* My sister made me this before I left. I made her one too.

*raises eyebrows* Sure, if that's what you say.*shakes head in disbelief* What's your personality like? *looks you over* i mean, are you mean, nice, whatever? How're you going to get along here?:

Is true! But my personality? *shrugs* I do not really know. Nice? I guess I am. My sister complained that I spent too much time climbing mountains with my brothers. So I like being outside. I guess also I’m not very girly, although I can sew when I need to, I just didn’t develop my skills in that area like the rest of the women in my family. I can’t make pretty
stuff like this *tugs at the embroidery on her tunic* umm...I like animals *pets Angel who wags her tail and love nibbles her hand* I’m training her for a dogsled eventually. When I go back she’ll be a good lead dog. Oh...my personality. *shakes her head* I’m sorry, I do
not really know what to say.

*sighs* Got'cha, you really think that, eh? *draw a little more on the paper* Everyone gets mad about this one, but if you give me a hard time, I will not hesitate to hurt you. *narrows eyes* How'd you get here and what your story? Enthrall me.:

*nods and watches her doodle* Is a long story. You still want to hear it? *shrugs* alright I’ll tell you short. I was born in Scandinavia but my family moved to the District of Alaska when I was young. We live in a log cabin up there. It’s nice down here, I don’t
have to go outside when it is thirty below when my bladder is full. There are indoor waterclosets here. Sorry, *bites her lip* I was telling you about how I got here. Up north when I turned 13, when I became a woman, my parents started looking for a man for me to marry. But I told them no, I told them that I would find one for myself. I can tell you that they didn’t really understand, marriages in my family have always been arranged, but my grandmother understood. She helped me convece my parents to let me choose. I
thought why not go to the biggest city in America? I am sure to find someone here acceptable, yes? I traveled with a friend of my father’s, a trapper. My little brother, he raises dogs, gave me Angel to keep me safe.

*clasps hands and grins evilly* My favorite! *giggles* So, who are the people in your life? Family, friends *snickers* boyfriends? *looks up happily* Tell me everything.:

*raises an eyebrow* I used to live with my mother Bera, father Refr, Grandmother Mardoll, my little brother Kormák, twin sister Dalla, older brother Valdis, and my new baby sister Reginn. Lots of family. Friends? Kormák’s been my best friend since nearly
forever, he’s only a year younger than Dalla and me. No boyfriend, I would most likely be on my way home if I had one of those.

Well, we've come to the last question. *nods* Then I can go out to the candy shop and get myself a phosphate *looks out the window again* So, anything else we oughta know about you?:

*shakes her head and smiles* Not that I can think of. *is licked my Angel* Other than this one is a little trouble maker. She likes to get into places that she shouldn’t so watch out. If you’re missing something check the couches because she likes to hide things in them.*grabs the dog’s nose playfully then scratches her ears* And she loves attention. She’s spoiled. Oh and *blushes a little embarrassed* could you hide any potatoes you might have in the kitchen? She likes potatoes and I never could break her of the habit of
getting into them. All other food, yes, but not potatoes. *shakes her head and fondly scratches Angel’s chin* She’s a weird dog.
